Dubai, UAE, 26 June 2018: Having just returned from competing in the 2018 Sodi World Series (SWS) Finals in Italy (14-16 June), Anjum Shaikh set foot back on UAE soil and immediately made an impact at Dubai Kartdrome with a Senior Cup win on Monday night (25 June).
Ahmed Al Hammadi appeared to have the contest under control early on. He nailed a best lap time of 59.606 seconds on the new Drop Circuit, edging out Ethan Watt by just 0.009 seconds. Shaikh was over two tenths of a second off the leader’s pace and lined on P4.
Al Hammadi made the most of pole position, kept his challengers behind and won Race One by 0.043 seconds over Shaikh. Race Two was a bit more contentious, and contact on the back straight dropped Al Hammadi down into sixth position, while Shaikh charged ahead and took the chequered flag by over four seconds ahead of Karim Al Azhari.
Anjum Shaikh collected 76 points on the night and the winner’s trophy. Ahmed Al Hammadi had to settle for second-place silverware with 69 points and Karim Al Azhari claimed his first SWS podium on 64 points.
In the Masters class, Atef Al Barwani continues to steamroll the competition. The Emirati racked up his ninth category triumph of the year. Dario Rubio and Pierre-Olivier Chevalier chased Al Barwani all evening, which earned Rubio second-place and Chevalier third.
Dubai Kartdrome Manager David Bright said, “For this time of year it’s great to see a full grid of 31 karts battling it out and the competition remain at a high level. We will continue to rotate through new circuit configurations to keep things interesting for the drivers.”
