Dubai, UAE, 25 January, 2018: Four new European karting stars join Round 3 of the F4UAE Championship this weekend on the 4.29K International Circuit at Dubai Autodrome, as the category continues to be the platform of choice for winter racing by those aiming for various European F4 championships which will begin in the coming months.
German Leon Köhler (#77), the 2017 CIK-FIA European KZ2 Champion, makes his circuit racing debut with US Racing/Rasgaira Motorsports, while three drivers join an expanded SILBERPFEIL Energy Dubai operation in Sami Taoufik (#3) from Morocco who was winner of the 2017 Rookie of the Year in CIK-FIA OK, alongside Italian Marzio Moretti (#15) who was the 2016 OKJ Italian Champion, and Brazilian Caio Collet (#23).
“This region has a lot of very good young karting drivers who will one day race in Formula 4 when they are old enough, so it is important to have these experienced European drivers come to the UAE to provide inspiration and something for everyone to aim for in the future,” said Mohamed Ben Sulayem, President of the ATCUAE, Chairman of the Emirates Motor Sport Federation and FIA Vice President for Sport.
“It is all about the growth of motorsport in the region and F4UAE has been a very important part of this process. We welcome all of the new drivers this weekend as our guests in Dubai, and wish everyone a safe weekend of racing.”
Köhler joins David Schumacher at US Racing, having made his debut last weekend in Abu Dhabi; impressively taking pole position and four podium finishes at Round 2.
While Taoufik, Collet and Moretti’s presence brings the Dubai-based SILBERPFEIL Energy Dubai team up to four-car operation, the largest in pitlane.
“We have a long history of working with winning karting drivers and helping them develop their racecraft right from the start, so to now also be recognised as a team of choice for those wanting to jump up to cars is something to be proud of from an organisation point of view,” said SILBERPFEIL Energy Dubai team owner Kevin Day.
“We’re looking forward to helping our new guys this weekend, they certainly have the pace in karts so hopefully we can see them do the same here.”
Dragon Motopark F4’s Charles Weerts leads the Drivers Championship on 142 points, followed by SILBERPFEIL Energy Dubai’s Olli Caldwell on 123 points and teammate Lucas Petersson three points behind in third place. SILBERPFEIL Energy Dubai leads the Teams Championship thanks to their five race wins out of eight so far this season.
In Thursday official testing, Collet clocked the fastest time during the two sessions, with a time of 1m38.335s, beating fellow rookie Köhler’s best time of 1m38.408s.
Round 3 of the 2017/18 F4UAE Championship will start on Friday January 26 with free practice, qualifying and Race 1, while Races 2 to 4 will be held on Saturday January 27, all on the 4.29K International Circuit at Dubai Autodrome.
